Dr. Jackson, UK professor, dies
The
Mercer County community lost one of its farm enthusiasts and educators with the
death of Dr. James A. Jackson Jr. at his Salvisa home Dec. 28. Jackson died
from complications of multiple myeloma cancer.
An
associate animal science professor a the University of Kentucky, Jackson, 59,
was a native of Hopkinsville and grew up on a diary grain farm in Trenton where
he was a Todd County 4-H and FFA member.
A 1968
graduate of Todd County High School, he served in Vietnam with the U. S. Air
Force, earned a degree in distributive agriculture from Austin Peay College in
Clarksville, TN and completed his master’s and doctorate degrees in animal
science at the University of Kentucky. In October 1982. he accepted a
teaching/research position with the UK Dairy Science program and became the
advisor for the UK Dairy Club for many years. In 2005, his appointment with UK
changed to a position of working in youth extension educating the 4-Her’s about
livestock judging.
Jackson
was also a member and past president of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s
Association, served as director on the Kentucky Angus Association board and was
a member of the National Angus Association. The Kentucky Angus Association
named him and his family the 2006 Angus Family of the Year.
Doris
Hamilton, current president of the Mercer Count Cattlemen’s Association,
praised Jackson’s service to the organization. “Dr. Jackson has been a member
of the Mercer County Cattlemen’s Association board of directors for nearly 10
years. He began his service to the organization as vice president. It was
Jack’s enthusiasm for the cattle industry and love for learning and teaching
that sparked a revitalization of the organization. Under Dr. Jackson’s
direction, the association began administering the cattle genetics cost-share
program using Ky Ag Development funds,” Hamilton said.
Jackson
served two terms as president of the association and at the time of his death
was serving on the board as past president. “We could always count on Jack to
motivate the board to seek opportunities for learning and progress. Our
organization owes a great deal to Jack and we will be forever grateful for his
help and dedication to improving the beef cattle industry. At the 2010 Mercer
County Fair Beef Show, we will present a new trophy in Dr. Jackson’s honor, the
‘Jack Jackson Memorial Supreme Champion Female trophy.’ We hope this will be
fitting tribute to Jack, so that his memory will live on,” Hamilton said.
Jackson also volunteered as
a 4_H leader in Mercer Count for many years and was honored by the Mercer
County 4-H Council as the “Mercer County Outstanding 4-H Leader for 2006.” He
was also a member and served on the board of the Salvisa Ruritan Club and was a
member of Kirkwood Baptist Church.
Dana
Anderson, Mercer County Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development, noted
that Jackson was instrumental in the overall livestock program in Mercer County
and made 4-H education a priority. “He provided leadership to our 4-H Council
recruitment and development programs. He was a dedicated man in what he
believed in and to the programs in which he was involved. I think he will be
missed not only in Mercer County, but throughout the state. He was involved in
4-H livestock judging on the state level, and 4-H has been a big part of his
and his family’s lives,” Anderson said.
Jackson
and his wife Elda, married in July of 1982 and moved to their farm in Salvisa
in May of 1984, where they began a purebred Angus cattle operation subsequently
named Dividing Ridge Farm. It was Jackson’s wish to be buried on his farm.
In
addition to his wife, Jackson is survived by four sons, twins Josh and Justin;
Joey and Jerry and a grandson, Isaiah Dumas and other relatives.
Jackson’
wife and sons have also been very active in local 4-H cattle and farming
programs throughout their lives.
A
memorial service honoring Jackson will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the
Salvisa Baptist Church and a Jack Jackson Scholarship Fund has been set up by
the Salvisa Ruritan Club, P. O. Box 3, Salvisa, KY 40272.
“Jack had
three loves: working with youth, cattle and his family. His desire was to be
remembered as a ‘farmer” – a steward of the land with a love of cattle and more
specifically, Angus Cattle,” said his wife, Elda.

ROSCOE
BROWN
A Salvisa man is dead after a fire destroyed his
mobile home Monday night.
Preliminary autopsy results show 67-year-old Roscoe Brown
died of smoke inhalation, according to Salvisa Fire Chief Howard Fallis.
Firefighters were called at
the scene around midnight Monday night when a neighbor reported hearing a loud
booming sound seeing flames a few minutes later. Fallis, who was the first
firefighter to arrive at the scene, said the trailer Brown lived in was
completely engulfed in flames, and the roof was starting to collapse when the
first firetrucks arrived. He said it took about 20 minutes before firefighters
were able to enter the structure, at which time they found Brown’s body in the
kitchen.
Fallis said it appeared
Brown had been working on a heater when the fire ignited, “(He) was in a
position where we believe he was doing something with his heater,: Fallis said.
“It was our suspicion that the fire originated from a heat source. We don’t
know what type of heat he was using, but we found kerosene heaters, some
propane containers in the yard and some electric heaters in the trailer.”
Funeral
arrangements for Brown are pending at McKinney Brown Funeral Home in Liberty.

RALPH
ANDERSON
Ralph G. Anderson, 86, of
Cincinnati, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 in Cincinnati.
Born in Mercer County in
1923, he was a 1950 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of
Engineering and founder of the Belcan Corporation.
Survivors include: a
daughter, Candace McCaw of Cincinnati.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Ruth Anderson.
Funeral arrangements are

(HH Thu Feb 18, 2010)
“Harrodsburg/Mercer
County has lost a great benefactor, preservationist and friend,” said Helen
Dedman chairman of The James Harrod Trust, about the Saturday death of local
philanthropist and Mercer native Ralph G. Anderson.
“When he
can back to his roots, he began an incredible series of restoration – Walnut
Hall, the Blue Front and Wildwood to name a few. He encouraged economic
development with his support of “The Legend of Daniel Boone” and most recently,
the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center. He was a great friend to The James
Harrod Trust, Harrodsburg Historical Society, Mercer County Library, Shaker
Village and so many more. He was positive unassuming. Just until recently when
asked how he was, he would answer, ‘Fantastic!’ That is the way I will remember
him –o Fantastic,: said Dedman.
Anderson,
86, died Saturday in Cincinnati. He founded the Cincinnati-based Belcan
Corporation in 1958, and it is now one of he largest engineering firms in the
nation with 7,500 employee worldwide.
A 1950
mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Kentucky, Anderson was the
lead donor for the university’s $25 million facility housing UK’s mechanical
engineering programs, and the building bears his name.
Well
known as a philanthropist, Anderson had a keen interest in historic
preservation and was also committed to promoting Kentucky agriculture. He loved
his native Mercer County and donated land for Anderson-Dean Community Park,
renovated several local historical properties and donated 50 acres on U.S. 127
North in Mercer County for the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center. He saved
the Thomas Logan House at Anderson-Dean Community Park, gave generously to The
James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital, Ragged Edge Community Theater, Olde Town
Tours, local churches and schools. He
paid for a study conducted by the University of Kentucky to determine the need
for a swimming pool for the local community, and he funded the local option
vote here.
His
Anderson Circle Farm in Mercer County, encompassing more than 7,000 acres, is
known as one of Kentucky’s leading beef cattle breeders and producers. Its
state-of-the-art show and sale barn had become a local landmark and has been
used for numerous community events, due to Anderson’s generosity.
When
accepting The James Harrod Trust’s first Jane Bird Hutton Preservation Award in
2001, Anderson said his father once told him he wouldn’t amount to a hill of
beans if he couldn’t milk a cow. He proved his farther wrong, worked his way
through college as a $50 per month student instructor and later amassed a
fortune with his own engineering company.
“He was
just a one of a kind person who always wanted to give back ot he community in
so many ways – he was just an outstanding person, said former Mercer County
Judge-Executive John Trisler.
Trisler
met Anderson 20 years ago when the community park was created. “He gave the
first $50,000, then 100 acres. He and Ruth (Anderson’s wife) were so supportive
to add to the park. He helped anyone who really needed help and he meant a lot
to me,” Trisler added.
“He was
an outstanding person, and we will surely miss him. He was so unselfish in both
his gifts and his life – we will never have anyone to do what he has done,”
Trisler said.
Joe
Myers, manager at Anderson Circle Farm the past three years, said Anderson
showed a great deal of community support and his contributions will be used for
many, many years. “I would call him a very wise person who had a lot of
foresight. He was a pleasure to work for, was very supportive, loved the land,
loved agriculture and especially loved Angus cattle,” Myers said, adding that
there is no doubt Anderson financially supported many efforts. “I’m sure that
will be missed,” said Myers.
“He
visited the farm just before Christmas. He loved to come to the farm and see
the cattle on the green pastures – he got a tremendous joy from that,” Myers
said.
Anderson
was born in Mercer County in 1923 and lived on a small farm on Warwick Road. In
1941, he went to Cincinnati in search of work. He joined the Air Force in 1943,
returned to Cincinnati and entered the University of Cincinnati to study mechanical
engineering two years and finished his degree at UK in 1950.
He worked for the Kett
Corporation, and when the firm moved from Ohio to Florida in 1958, Anderson
decided to stay in Cincinnati and start his own business. Business was slow the
first few years, but Anderson led Belcan to the top of the engineering
consulting industry.
Anderson
was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anderson, whom he married in 1947. He
is survived by a daughter, Candace McCaw of Cincinnati. At The Herald’s
press time Wednesday, funeral arrangements for Anderson were incomplete at the
Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home in Cincinnati.
(HH Thu Feb 18, 2010)
It was
with sadness that we learned of the death of Ralph G. Anderson Saturday. In his
86 years, Anderson touched more lives than most of us will in half that time.
Born into
a modest home in Mercer County, Anderson didn’t cotton to the idea of farming
despite the fact his father told him “if he didn’t’ learn how to milk a cow,
he’d never amount to a hill of beans.
While it
is a worthy profession, we are glad Anderson balked on milking cows and chose
the path he did, working himself through college and become the founder of
Belcan Corporation in 1958, now one of the largest engineering firms in the
nation.
Anyone
living in Mercer County has benefited from Anderson’s generosity. He helped
finance many community endeavors including the Anderson-Dean Community Park
that bears his name, the local hospital, library, community theater,
Shakertown, the Kentucky Agriculture Heritage Center, churches, schools and
many historic preservation projects.
He preserved the land by accumulating acreage for his Anderson
Circle Farm on U.S. 127 North and built a showbarn second to none. He could
have used it only for his farm’s cattle sales and other endeavors, but he
generously opened the showbarn as the venue for many community charitable
events. During the past years, even though his health was failing, Anderson
appeared at more than one community event, graciously signing copies of “Anderson’s
Legacy,” by Margaret A. Lane and giving them away to guests. The book outlines
Anderson’s 50 years with Belccan Corporation and its worldwide impact.
While
Anderson’s generosity is what he may be remembered for most, we would be amiss
not to share this man’s philosophy about life in general. His motto was “do
what you say you’re going to do and be honest.” The Beclan Charter states “live
by your word” and “think positively about your work and life.”
Living
the American dream, Anderson said he didn’t plan each step of his success, but
took advantage of opportunities. While having his business and a home in
Cincinnati, he never forgot his Mercer County roots and enjoyed spending time
at Anderson Circle Farm.
Just as he never forgot
Mercer County, its citizens are not likely to forget him – his legacy will live
on here for many years to come and will serve as a positive reminder that it
takes hard work and seizing opportunities to be successful in life, and those
who reach success should be generous in sharing it.
Anderson Circle Farm got its
name because the land follows circles of country roads, but it is significant
too in that Ralph Anderson came full circle back to his roots here, and Mercer
County is blessed because of it.

hard to comprehend… the many great things he did,” Pendleton said. “… He never
wanted anything back. …He gave, but he never wanted anything in return.”
Pendleton, a member of the
Kentucky Heritage Agriculture Center Committee and a farmer, remembered
Anderson not just as humble and generous, but also as a man with a wonderful
wit. The senator shared several stories about Anderson, who was the founder of
Belcan in Cincinnati, OH. The company, of which he remained CEO and president
until his death Feb. 13, grew into one of the country’s largest corporations.
Pendleton
noted Anderson’s contributions to Mercer County, Cincinnati and the University
of Kentucky. “They will miss him in Mercer County, and we will miss him in all
the Commonwealth of Kentucky for the many things he did.”
The
Senate adjourned Friday in honor of Anderson.
